Company History

The Thurmont Community Ambulance Service, was incorporated in December 1969. A successor to ambulance operations of the Creager Funeral Home and Thurmont American Legion, it has grown from a single vehicle company staffed by 10, to a three-vehicle company staffed by 70 EMT-Basic and 8 EMT-Paramedics. Total membership numbers over 100.

Thurmont is a rapidly growing municipality in northern Frederick county. The entire response area of the ambulance company serves nearly 12,000 citizens located within 50 square miles, and consists of urban as well as rural settings. A mountainous area to the west contains a state and national park, both of which are heavily used by visitors during the warm months.

In 1988, Thurmont Ambulance service moved from a two bay garage it rented from the Guardian Hose Company to a newly constructed four bay building with meeting, training, and sleeping quarters. In addition to three ambulances, the stations houses a duty officer vehicle and Medic 4, an ALS chase car owned by Frederick County Advanced Life Support.

In 1999 the ambulance company requested career personnel from Frederick County Department of Fire and Rescue Services to assist in daytime responses. Now, the company is staffed Monday through Friday 6 am to 6 pm. Even though the company handled over 1000 calls in year 2000, volunteers staffed 63% of those calls with out assistance from career staffing. An additional 6% of calls were staffed by a combination of volunteer and career personnel.
